Business Visa or Work Visa for Business Trips to Indonesia: Which is Right for Me?

1. Business Visa
"I'm going on a short business trip to Indonesia to just meet and sign a contract." → A business visa is the answer.
1) Main Scope of Activities
a. Attending meetings, seminars, and conferences
b. Visiting partners, negotiating contracts, and conducting investment research
c. Pre-project preparation activities (however, work or salary receipt is not permitted)
d. Machinery installation and repair (short-term)
2) Types
a. Single Entry Visa (C Visa): 60-day stay, extendable (up to 180 days)
b. Multiple Entry Visa (D Visa): Valid for one year, with free entry and exit, and stays in 60-day increments
c. Required Documents
Application form from sponsoring company - provided –
Sponsoring company immigration ID/password (Molina Portal Website)
Sponsoring company bank statement - required in some cases –
Passport copy (valid for at least 6 months)
Passport photo (soft file)
Residence address (hotel, etc.)
👉 This is the best option for short-term business trips or market research purposes. However, you will need a sponsoring company in Indonesia.
2. Work Visa (ITAS)
Companies operating corporations, branches, or construction sites (projects) in Indonesia and dispatching headquarters staff to perform management, technical support, and project supervision, or seeking employment at a local company, require a work permit (IMTA) and a short-term stay permit (ITAS). The Work e-VISA is required for these purposes.
1) Characteristics of work visas for Korean dispatched workers
a. Employment Structure
The Indonesian local subsidiary or project manager acts as the sponsor and applies for a work visa. Even if the actual salary is paid by the Korean headquarters, legally, the employee is considered employed through the local subsidiary. herefore, local tax and labor laws may apply.
b. Purpose of the Dispatch
Project management and supervision (Construction Supervision, Project Management)
Technical support and engineering services
Operational and financial management between headquarters and local branches
Permits, subcontractor coordination, quality control
c. Period of Stay
Generally issued for one year, extendable (up to five years)
A short-term ITAS (up to six months) may also be issued depending on project requirements.
d. Required Documents (For Dispatched Workers)
Passport copy (valid for at least 18 months)
Passport-size photo (white or red background)
University graduation certificate
Certificate of employment or work experience
Employment contract (under the local company’s name to prove a formal employment relationship)
Sponsor company documents

② Bank statement with a minimum of USD 2,000 for the past two months

ven if you are paid by the head office, without a work visa, you may be considered illegal.
Dispatched workers are generally classified as technical or managerial, so proof of employment history and academic qualifications are essential.
Some industries (construction, energy, plants, etc.) are linked to SKK/SBU and foreign employment quotas, requiring professional consulting.
3) Checklist for Indonesian workers dispatched to the Headquarters
① Visa Preparation
Local employment is required, regardless of whether the head office pays the salary.
The sponsoring company must be an Indonesian corporation or project lead company.
② Employment contract & dispatch order
Prepare an employment contract in the name of the local corporation.
A dispatch order (Assignment Letter, Secondment Letter) issued by the head office is required - Consultation required -
Verify that the contract terms and actual working conditions align - Consultation required -
③ Salary & Tax
Consideration of Indonesian taxation is required even when paying salaries to the head office - Consultation required –
Applicability of PPH 21 (Employment Income Tax) and BPJS (Social Security) (BPJS membership is not required for stays of six months or less)
Payment of salaries to short-term residents under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (Korea-Indonesia Tax Convention) - Consultation required -
④ Whether or not family is present
Spouses and children can apply for Dependent ITAS (family members can also obtain ITAS through their spouse's ITAS).
Prior consideration is required for children's education, living expenses, and health insurance.
⑤ Check requirements by industry and type
